Jesus Christ as the Messiah, Prophecies and Fulfillment
"Christ" is derived from the Greek christós, meaning the "Anointed One." This title corresponds to the Hebrew-derived "Messiah.

Jesus Christ Prevails over Satan
Genesis 3
|
[9] And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
[10] And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
[11] And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
[12] And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
[13] And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
[14] And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
[15] And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
|
The serpent represents Satan. The woman's seed is Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ through his great atoning sacrifice and resurrection bruised Satan's head.

[7] And as they departed, Jesus began to say
unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the
wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? [8] But what went
ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that
wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. [9] But what went ye out for to see? A

[5] And he also spake concerning the
prophets, how great a number had testified of these things,
concerning this Messiah, of whom he had spoken, or this Redeemer of
the world.
[6] Wherefore, all mankind were in a lost
and in a fallen state, and ever would be save they should rely on
this Redeemer.
[7] And he spake also concerning a prophet
who should come before the Messiah, to prepare the way of the Lord
--
[8] Yea, even he should go forth and cry in
the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, and make his paths
straight; for there standeth one among you whom ye know not; and he
is mightier than I, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
And much spake my father concerning this thing.
[9] And my father said he should baptize in
Bethabara, beyond Jordan; and he also said he should baptize with
water; even that he should baptize the Messiah with
water.
[10] And after he had baptized the Messiah
with water, he should behold and bear record that he had baptized
the Lamb of God, who should take away the sins of the
world. | |

Christ's Temptations
Matthew
4
|
[1] Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into
the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. [2] And when he had
fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. [3] And when the
tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command
that these stones be made bread. [4] But he answered and said, It is written,
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth
out of the mouth of God. [5] Then the devil taketh him up into the
holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, [6] And saith unto
him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is
written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in
their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy
foot against a stone. [7] Jesus said unto him, It is written
again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. [8] Again, the
devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him
all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; [9] And saith unto
him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and
worship me. [10]
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written,
Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou
serve. [11] Then
the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto
him.

Announces His Mission in the Nazareth Synagogue
Isaiah
61
|
[1] The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me;
because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the
meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim
liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that
are bound; [2]
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of
vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; [3] To appoint unto
them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil
of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of
heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the
planting of the LORD, that he might be
glorified. |
Luke
4
|
[16] And he came to Nazareth, where he had
been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue
on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. [17] And there was
delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had
opened the book, he found the place where it was written, [18] The Spirit of
the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the
gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to
preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the
blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, [19] To preach the
acceptable year of the Lord. [20] And he closed the book, and he gave it
again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that
were in the synagogue were fastened on him. [21] And he began
to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your
ears. [22] And
all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which
proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's
son? | |

Christ's Teaching using Parables
Isaiah
6
|
[9] And he said, Go, and tell this people,
Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive
not. [10] Make
the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut
their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears,
and understand with their heart, and convert, and be
healed. |
Matthew
13
|
[10] And the disciples came, and said unto
him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? [11] He answered
and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the
mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. [12] For whosoever
hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but
whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he
hath. [13]
Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not;
and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. [14] And in them is
fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall
hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall
not perceive: [15] For this people's heart is waxed gross,
and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed;
lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with
their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be
converted, and I should heal them. [16] But blessed are your eyes, for they
see: and your ears, for they hear. [17] For verily I say unto you, That many
prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye
see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear,
and have not heard them. | |
Jesus
Christ Rebukes the Scribes & Pharisees using the Words of
Isaiah
Matthew
15
|
[1] Then came to Jesus scribes and
Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, [2] Why do thy
disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not
their hands when they eat bread. [3] But he answered and said unto them, Why
do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? [4] For God
commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that
curseth father or mother, let him die the death. [5] But ye say,
Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by
whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; [6] And honour not
his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the
commandment of God of none effect by your
tradition. |
The Jewish people of Jesus’ day had a way to get
around the command to honor your father and mother. They could then say
that their resources were unavailable to help their parents if they
declared that all their possessions or savings were a gift to God,
specially dedicated to Him,
Jesus condemns their hollow tradition as
hypocrisy.
Matthew
15
|
[7] Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy
of you, saying, [8] This people draweth nigh unto me with
their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is
far from me. [9]
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the
commandments of men.

Jesus
Christ, the Bread of Life & Manna
John
6
|
[27] Labour not for the meat which
perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life,
which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the
Father sealed. [28] Then said they unto him, What shall we
do, that we might work the works of God? [29] Jesus answered and said unto them, This
is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. [30] They said
therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see,
and believe thee? what dost thou work? [31] Our fathers did eat manna in the
desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. [32] Then Jesus
said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not
that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from
heaven. [33] For
the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth
life unto the world. [34] Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore
give us this bread. [35] And Jesus said unto them, I am the
bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that
believeth on me shall never thirst.
[48] I am that bread of life. [49] Your fathers
did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. [50] This is the
bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and
not die. [51] I
am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of
this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give
is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. [52] The Jews
therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us
his flesh to eat? [53] Then Jesus said unto them, Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man,
and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. [54] Whoso eateth
my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise
him up at the last day. [55] For my flesh is meat indeed, and my
blood is drink indeed. [56] He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh
my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. [57] As the living Father hath sent me, and
I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by
me. [58] This is
that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat
manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for
ever. | |

good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that

in your law, I said, Ye are gods? [35] If he called them gods, unto whom the
word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; [36] Say ye of him,
whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou

[1] And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem,
and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent
Jesus two disciples, [2] Saying unto them, Go into the village
over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a
colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. [3] And if any man
say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and
straightway he will send them. [4] All this was done, that it might be
fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, [5] Tell ye the
daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and
sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. [6] And the
disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, [7] And brought the
ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him

[5] And the people spake against God, and
against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die
in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any
water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. [6] And the LORD
sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and
much people of Israel died. [7] Therefore the people came to Moses, and
said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and
against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents
from us. And Moses prayed for the people. [8] And the LORD

is none other nation on earth that would crucify their God. [4] For should the
mighty miracles be wrought among other nations they would repent,

|
[1] Who hath believed our report? and to
whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? [2] For he shall grow up before him as a
tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor
comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we
should desire him. [3] He is despised and rejected of men; a
man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our
faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. [4] Surely he hath
borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him
stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. [5] But he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement
of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. [6] All we like
sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and
the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. [7] He was
oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is
brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her
shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. [8] He was taken
from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation?
for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the
transgression of my people was he stricken. [9] And he made his
grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he
had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. [10] Yet it pleased
the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt
make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall
prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his
hand. [11] He
shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his
knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear
their iniquities. [12] Therefore will I divide him a portion
with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong;
because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered
with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made
intercession for the transgressors. |

[26] And the angel of the Lord spake unto
Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that
goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. [27] And he arose
and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great
authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge
of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, [28] Was returning,
and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. [29] Then the
Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this
chariot. [30]
And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet
Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? [31] And he said,
How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip
that he would come up and sit with him. [32] The place of the scripture which he
read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a
lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: [33] In his
humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his
generation? for his life is taken from the earth. [34] And the eunuch
answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet
this? of himself, or of some other man? [35] Then Philip opened his mouth, and began
at the same scripture, and preached unto him
Jesus. |

[5] For behold, the time cometh, and is not
far distant, that with power, the Lord Omnipotent who reigneth, who
was, and is from all eternity to all eternity, shall come down from
heaven among the children of men, and shall dwell in a tabernacle of
clay, and shall go forth amongst men, working mighty miracles, such
as healing the sick, raising the dead, causing the lame to walk, the
blind to receive their sight, and the deaf to hear, and curing all
manner of diseases.
[6] And he shall cast out devils, or the
evil spirits which dwell in the hearts of the children of
men.
[7] And lo, he shall suffer temptations, and
pain of body, hunger, thirst, and fatigue, even more than man can
suffer, except it be unto death; for behold, blood cometh from every
pore, so great shall be his anguish for the wickedness and the
abominations of his people.
[8] And he shall be called Jesus Christ, the
Son of God, the Father of heaven and earth, the Creator of all
things from the beginning; and his mother shall be called
Mary. |

[1] The first day of the week cometh
Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and
seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
[2]
Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other
disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken
away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have
laid him.
[3] Peter therefore went forth, and that
other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.
[4] So they
ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came
first to the sepulchre.
[5] And he stooping down, and
looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not
in.
[6] Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and
went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes
lie,
[7] And the napkin, that was about his head, not
lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by
itself.
[8] Then went in also that other disciple,
which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and
believed.
[9] For as yet they knew not the scripture,
that he must rise again from the dead.
[10] Then the
disciples went away again unto their own home.
[11] But Mary stood without at
the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked
into the sepulchre,
[12]
And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the
other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
[13]
And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them,
Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have
laid him.
[14]
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus
standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
[15]
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou?
She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou
have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will
take him away.
[16]
Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him,
Rabboni; which is to say, Master. |

And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which
is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall
cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and
there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall
remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. [5] And ye shall flee to the valley of the
mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal:
yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in
the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come,
and all the saints with thee. [6] And it
shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear,
nor dark: [7] But it shall be one day which
shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to
pass, that at evening time it shall be light.

Luke 24
Jesus
teaches the two disciples on the Road to Emmaus:
|
[25] Then he said unto them, O fools, and
slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: [26] Ought not
Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his
glory? [27] And
beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in
all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
[28] And they drew nigh unto the village,
whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone
further. [29]
But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward
evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with
them. [30] And
it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and
blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. [31] And their eyes were opened, and they
knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. [32] And they said
one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked
with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
[33] And they rose up the same hour, and
returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and
them that were with them, [34] Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and
hath appeared to Simon. [35] And they told what things were done in
the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. [36] And as they
thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto
them, Peace be unto you. [37] But they were terrified and affrighted,
and supposed that they had seen a spirit. [38] And he said
unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your
hearts? [39]
Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and
see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. [40] And when he
had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. [41] And while they
yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye
here any meat? [42] And they gave him a piece of a broiled
fish, and of an honeycomb. [43] And he took it, and did eat before
them. [44] And
he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while
I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were
written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms,
concerning me. [45] Then opened he their understanding,
that they might understand the scriptures, [46] And said unto
them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and
to rise from the dead the third day:
